Uganda Open – A Grandmaster Edition

Uganda Open Chess Championship 2025 Makes History with Grandmaster Participation
The Uganda Open Chess Championship, one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious tournaments, took place from May 15th to 18th, 2025. Despite a lower-than-expected turnout of approximately 200 players, likely due to the numerous tournaments held earlier in the season, the event turned out to be historic.

A stunning moment came when Junior Champion Pido Edwin held Grandmaster Timur to a draw, sparking hopes among spectators that local players could challenge the Grandmaster. However, Timur demonstrated his expertise, finishing with an impressive 7.5/8 victory.
